String of break ins plaguing Uphill concerns Nelson Police

A string of thefts in the Uphill district of Nelson is raising alarm bells at the Nelson Police Department.
Sergeant Nate Holt said in a media release Saturday, the string of break ins began in late April.
“Since April 23, 2016 the Nelson Police Department has been monitoring a series of residential Break and Enters to homes in the Uphill area of Nelson,” Hold explained.
“Nelson Police Department is not able to confirm that these crimes are linked at this time but there has been a pattern noted by investigators.
“These offences have occurred during the night or early morning hours while residents are likely to have been at home.”
Holt said the suspect(s) have targeted homes that are insecure and have left no signs of forced entry or damage. In several cases the suspect(s) have stolen cash or personal items from inside the home.
“Investigation is ongoing at this time and the Nelson Police Department is asking anyone with information to contact the Nelson Police Department or Crimestoppers,” Holt said.
Holt said the NPD would like to remind residents to ensure their vehicles and residences are secure to avoid becoming potential victims of crime and to report any suspicious activity or persons to police.
Alberta man arrested on Canada Wide Warrant
An Alberta man wanted on a Canada wide warrant was apprehended Thursday (May 12) by Nelson Police Sergeant Dino Falcone said in a media release Friday.
Falcone said the 29-year-old man, wanted for being unlawfully at Large, had escaped from a maximum security Psychiatric Ward in Edmonton, Alberta on April 23, 2016.
In Nelson Provincial Court Friday, the Alberta patient was issued a Warrant Remanding a Prisoner and is scheduled to be transported back to Edmonton in the next few days.
Falcone said police are thankful that no one was hurt as the transient male was considered extremely dangerous by the Alberta authorities.
Scams remain a concern to Nelson Police
Falcone said Nelson police are reminding the public not to give out any personal information after reports of a BC Hydro and Bank Scams circulating through the Heritage City area.
Falcone said the public, who have been contacted by a commercial bank who are unsure of the request, contact the local financial institution directly or visit in person with a copy of the e-mail.
As for the BC Hydro Scam, the unknown person calls claiming to be from BC Hydro and requests payment in the said amount or the customer will be disconnected.
Falcone said the public is asked to contact the local hydro provider to confirm status.
The public can also report any scams to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
