Nelson Police responds to firearm incident near school

Nelson Police continues to investigate an incident Friday morning near Hume School of a person waving a firearm.

Nelson Police said in a media release that at approximately 11 a.m., the officers responded to an individual waving a firearm around in the 300 block of Nelson Avenue.

Nelson Police said that several officers attended to the scene, where the male suspect was located in possession of what appeared to be a handgun.

“Fortunately, the individual complied with police instructions and the firearm was seized without incident,” Nelson Police said.

“Upon further examination, the firearm is believed to be real and a large caliber handgun.  The firearm was not loaded.”

Nelson Police said officers are continuing with their investigation, adding that firearms charges could be laid as a result of this incident.

Nelson Police would like to thank the members of the public who reported this incident in a timely manner.
