UPDATE: Tip from public leads to arrest of suspect in Nelson

The Nelson Police Department is expressing its deepest gratitude to the public for their assistance in apprehending a man wanted in relation to numerous files from multiple jurisdictions Friday.

In a media release Friday afternoon, Nelson Police said Aza Tobias Hanbury was located and apprehended without incident in the 200 block of Baker Street thanks to the vigilance of a member of the community member who recognized the suspect.

Hanbury was wanted by both the Salmo RCMP and Nelson Police Department for warrants and new charges related to property crimes, dangerous driving, and fleeing from police.

“We are incredibly grateful for the public’s assistance in locating Aza Hanbury,” said NPD Inspector Kris Rice.

“Their willingness to report sightings and provide information directly contributed to his arrest.”

Nelson Police said that during this arrest, Hanbury was found to be in possession of several weapons, including a loaded firearm.

“This person is a prolific offended who has shown a willingness to do whatever was necessary to evade arrest in the past,” said Nelson Police Chief Constable Donovan Fisher.

“This was potentially a very dangerous situation and compliments the officers for taking him into custody without incident.”

The collaborative efforts between the Salmo RCMP and the Nelson Police Department in coordinating the investigations, emphasizing the importance of inter-agency cooperation in addressing criminal activities that spread jurisdictions.

Currently, Aza Hanbury is charged with multiple offences, including;

Nelson Police Department

  • Possession of a Weapon Dangerous to the Public
  • Unsafe Handling / Storage of a Firearm
  • Possession of a Firearm with Ammunition without being the Holder of a License
  • Possession of a Firearm without being the Holder of a License
  • Operate a Conveyance (Motor Vehicle) in a Manner Dangerous to the Public
  • Mischief
  • Breach of Conditions of an Undertaking

Salmo RCMP

  • Operate a Conveyance (Motor Vehicle) in a Manner Dangerous to the Public
  • Mischief
  • Breach of Conditions of an Undertaking

Police said there are currently other ongoing investigations that may result in additional charges.

The truck that Hanbury was believed to be in possession of, a grey 2017 Dodge Ram 3500 diesel, remains outstanding and police continue to seek the public’s help in locating it.

The Nelson Police Department extends sincere appreciation to the public for their unwavering support and cooperation in keeping our community safe.

At the time of this media release, Aza Hanbury remains in police custody awaiting a bail hearing where police and Crown counsel will be seeking his further detention.

Aza Hanbury is considered innocent unless proven guilty in court.
