Drugs in the downtown core of the Heritage City continues to be a problem for police as Nelson members dealt with two separate files this past week said Sergeant Corey Hoy in a media release Thursday.

Thursday, shortly after the noon time bell, NPD dispatch received a call for service after it was reported two females were found using drugs in a local public washroom.

Upon police arrival, police confirmed that one of the females had consumed drugs. That female was subsequently transported to Kootenay Lake Hospital for assessment. Hoy said police also seized various other narcotics from the female. The investigation continues into the possibility of charges.

Transient awaiting bail hearing on theft charges

A man is awaiting bail hearing after being arrested for theft near the Chalko Mika Mall Wednesday afternoon.

At approximately 1:28 p.m. Wednesday, NPD dispatch received a call of a theft in the 400 Block of Baker Street. The man, known to police, had reportedly stolen property from a merchant during the Wednesday Baker Street Market.

Hoy said shortly after, at approximately 1:45 p.m. NPD dispatch received a call that a man was harassing Chahko Mika Mall staff and attempting to start a fight in one of the businesses.

Police arrived to identify the person as the same male from the earlier theft.

The man was arrested and subsequently charged with theft and causing a disturbance.  The male is known to police as being transient having only been in the Nelson area for a short period of time. He is being held to await a bail hearing that will occur later this week.
