Bears and booze keep NPD officers busy

Bears and booze kept City Police members busy during the weekend in Nelson.
The hairy bruins were a thorn in the side of Nelson residents during the weekend as NPD dispatch received several calls of reports of bears in both the hospital and Fairview areas.
During an altercation near Seventh Street and Gordon Road, officers were forced to use “non-lethal flash bangs” to scare the bear, who had made a mess of several bags of garbage on the streets.
NPD uses this method when the bear is non-aggressive.
NPD would like to remind the public to keep garbage secure, as easy access will only cause more encounters with bears.
Charges pending against intoxicated female
Monday (May 12), at 7:30 p.m., NPD dispatch received a report of a female who was passed out in the 500 Block of Hendryx Street.
Upon arrival NPD officers found a 50-year-old intoxicated female who had court imposed conditions not to consume alcohol. Charges for breach of probation are pending.
Paramedics assist police in dealing with passed-out male
Early Sunday morning (May 11) at 6:30 a.m. NPD officers were called to a report of a man passed out on the shoulder of Highway 3A near Lakeview Crescent on the west side of Nelson.
Preliminary reports thought the man had fallen from the five-metre wall adjacent to the highway.
However, when paramedics arrived it was determined the man had simply passed out.
Fight night at Ward and Baker
Saturday (May 10) afternoon at 5:10 p.m., Nelson Police was called to a fight in the area of Ward and Baker Streets.
When police arrived it was determined the fight was between intoxicated males. Both were arrested.
One of the combatants was held due to his being intoxicated and was released when he was sober. The fight was consensual and no charges are pending.
