Pet owners warned of poisonous substance in Cranbrook community forest

Two dogs died recently from ingesting a poisonous substance near Cranbrook.

The Ministry of Forest, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, Recreation Sites and Trails BC is warning residents and visitors to keep pets on leash in the Cranbrook Community Forest, or avoid the area altogether, after two dogs died recently from ingesting a poisonous substance.

Warning signs have been posted at multiple access points to the community forest.

The two dogs were observed eating a white fatty-like substance. Local RCMP are investigating the incidents.

Bizarre 'creepy clown craze' reaches the Kootenays

A bizarre US trend - dubbed the 'creepy clown craze' by media - has made its way to the Kootenays, according to Trail RCMP Cpl. Darryl Orr.

Orr says the phenomenon (which Time Magazine says began in August in South Carolina after reports of people in clown costumes trying to lure children into the woods and has since expanded to see reports of “killer clown” sightings all over the US and even some in the UK), has escalated to violence and has achieved a sort of cult following.

Police seek public information in disturbing animal cruelty case
The Castlegar RCMP are investigating a disturbing incident of animal cruelty, according too RCMP Sgt. Laurel Mathew.
"Some time in the early morning hours of Oct. 12, a resident in the rural 2000 block of Charleston Avenue in Robson went into her yard and discovered a cat that had been hung on her fence."
Mathew said the woman  was able to cut the cat down from the fence, but the cat died just prior to the police arriving.

UPDATED: RCMP confirm suspect in Golden shooting found deceased

RCMP have confirmed that police have located the body of the suspect Sheldon Kyle Thunderblanket Cpl. Dan Moskaluk said in a media release Wednesday.

Dan Moskaluk said Thunderblanket was found deceased.

"A positive confirmation of identification and the exact cause of death is now the subject of a full investigation by the BC Coroner Service," Dan Moskaluk said in the media release.

"The deceased was located within the identified search area east of Revelstoke," he added.

Man arrested for assault following fight with NPD officer

A local man facing charges after fight with police.

The flood of sirens and police cars descending on lower Gyro Park concluded with the arrest of man for assault Friday afternoon said a Nelson Police media release.

"A local man was arrested and charged with assaulting police, resisting arrest and obstruction after an incident in the lower Gyro Park area," said Acting NPD Sergeant Matt Caldwell in the media release.

A proactive online investigation by the BC Integrated Child Exploitation (BC ICE) Unit has resulted in charges of Making Child Pornography and Arrangement or Agreement to commit a sexual offence against a child. 

On March 10, 56-year-old Ronald Gardner, of no fixed address, was arrested and subsequently charged with the above noted offences, as well as Failing to Comply with Prohibition Order originating from historical child-pornography-related charges.

City seeks to recoup legal fees from Officer convicted of assault

Constable Drew Turner resigned his position as a police officer with NPD earlier this year.

The City of Nelson has decided to try to recoup legal fees from former Constable Drew Turner.

"At the September 20th board meeting, the Nelson Police Board reached a decision to recover legal fees from former Officer Drew Turner for defense of assault charges laid against Mr. Turner in 2014," said the City of Nelson media release Friday.

"Mr. Turner has been notified of the Board’s decision."

Illicit drug deaths in the province remain high

The number of illicit drug deaths continued to drop slightly in August but the number of deaths from illicit drug use remains significantly increased from previous years, the latest statistics from the BC Coroners Service show.

In the first eight months of 2016 (Jan. 1 through Aug. 31), the total number of deaths from illicit drug use was 488, an increase of 61.6 per cent from

the same time period in 2015.

Armed robbery in Fruitvale prompts arrest of three locals

Three local people are in police custody after an armed robbery of the BC Liquor Store in Fruitvale this morning.

“A male entered the store at around 9 a.m., brandishing a handgun, and confronted the employee, making off with a great deal of cash,” said Trail top cop Sgt. Darren Oelke.

Later the same morning, police arrested three people, two men and a woman, in front of the Bank of Montreal in Trail's downtown core.
