City seeks to recoup legal fees from Officer convicted of assault

Constable Drew Turner resigned his position as a police officer with NPD earlier this year.

The City of Nelson has decided to try to recoup legal fees from former Constable Drew Turner.

"At the September 20th board meeting, the Nelson Police Board reached a decision to recover legal fees from former Officer Drew Turner for defense of assault charges laid against Mr. Turner in 2014," said the City of Nelson media release Friday.

"Mr. Turner has been notified of the Board’s decision."

The number of illicit drug deaths continued to drop slightly in August but the number of deaths from illicit drug use remains significantly increased from previous years, the latest statistics from the BC Coroners Service show.

In the first eight months of 2016 (Jan. 1 through Aug. 31), the total number of deaths from illicit drug use was 488, an increase of 61.6 per cent from

the same time period in 2015.

Three local people are in police custody after an armed robbery of the BC Liquor Store in Fruitvale this morning.

“A male entered the store at around 9 a.m., brandishing a handgun, and confronted the employee, making off with a great deal of cash,” said Trail top cop Sgt. Darren Oelke.

Later the same morning, police arrested three people, two men and a woman, in front of the Bank of Montreal in Trail's downtown core.

Charges have now been laid against 28-year-old Kenneth Jacob Fenton in regards to the motor-vehicle-related death of West Shore RCMP Const. Sarah Beckett on April 5.

The arrest was a result of a criminal investigation led by the RCMP Island District GIS with assistance from the Saanich Police Department who conducted the collision scene investigation.

A provincial court judge in Nelson has set the start of a criminal trial stemming from a 2013 aviation fuel spill in the Slocan Valley for mid-October.

Judge Robert Brown told lawyers attending a preliminary hearing by conference call that the trial will begin on October 11.

The Executive Flight Centre, one of its employees, and the provincial government are all co-defendants in the case, begun after a tanker truck carrying aviation fuel up a logging road in the Slocan Valley tipped over and spilled 33,000 litres of fuel.

Two people were taken to Kootenay Lake Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries following a truck accident Saturday on Giveout Creek Road south of Nelson.

Nelson Fire Rescue Michael Daloise said in a media release firefighters were called to an accident near the one kilometer road marker on Giveout Creek Forestry Road at approximately 5:25 p.m. Saturday (September 3).

A Ford pickup truck ended up down a steep bank.

The entrance to Giveout Creek Road is few kilometers south of Nelson on Highway 6.

Revelstoke RCMP is seeking public assistance in establishing the identity of a deceased adult male, whose body was discovered by sight-seers on Friday August 26, in a forested area along Highway 1.

RCMP Cpl. Thomas Blakney said in a media release on (Friday) August 26, shortly after 4 p.m., police received a report from a group of sight-seers, of the discovery of the body of an adult male at a makeshift campsite.

Police said Davis was given a ride home by friends and family and is doing well.
