Wildcats finish third at Kootenay Hoop Championships, Fernie off to BC's

Mount Sentinel Wildcats scored early and often en route to a convincing 68-37 victory over Golden Eagles in Consolation action at the Kootenay High School A Boy’s Basketball Championships Saturday afternoon at the Nakusp Secondary School.

Kyle Kabatoff scored 21 points to lead the Wildcats, which lost in the semi-finals to host Nakusp Cougars. Aaron Spurge had 19 points while Mike Hennelly had 20 to pace the Mount Sentinel offence.

The Wildcats opened 25-10 after one quarter, extending the lead to 42-22 at recess.

During the semi-finals, Nakusp outscored the Cats 23-6 to break open a close game to defeat the West Kootenay rivals 64-53. Kabatoff led the Wildcats with 23 points with Nathan Hernandez adding seven.

Tim Barisoff led the Cougars with 18 points while Kell Wictorin had 15 and Jordan Katchen 14.

In the final, Fernie Falcons built up an early lead to knock off the Cougars to claim the Kootenay Championship and a berth at the BC High School High School A Boy’s Basketball Championships March 6-9 at the Langley Events Centre.

In Trail, Sparwood edged out Grand Forks Wolves in a close game to claim the Kootenay High School AA Boy’s Basketball Zone title.
