The numbers are in and by all accounts, the 2019 West Kootenay MS Challenge was another success.

Eleven teams and 58 cyclists raised almost $82,000 to provide local programs and services to persons affected by MS in the West Kootenay area including information, advocacy, support and referral services, the Equipment Provision Program, the Special Assistance Program, the MS Knowledge Network and self-help groups during the July 6-7 event.

“The purpose of MS Bike is to raise awareness about MS and the funds necessary to support our mission: to be a leader in finding a cure for MS and enabling people affected by MS to enhance their quality of life,” said Katherine Campbell, Senior Coordinator Development MS Society of Canada.

Individually, Tammy Zirk edged out Jim Noiles for the top prize, raising $6,600. Samantha Segal was third at $6,080 followed by Richard James at $5855 and Sally Hardy at $4160.

The Nelson Daily sponsored Team category was once again won by The Rear Guard, which topped the $10,000 mark. Let’s Crush MS was second at $9,455 with Ride Sally Ride third at $8,280.

The two-day ride took competitors to Crescent Valley and back through Blewett on Day one. After Saturday’s banquet at Rotary Lakeside Park, riders ventured to Proctor before returning to Nelson via Longbeach Road.

“Funds are also used to support national research that is working towards finding a cure for MS as well as enhancing the quality of life for everyone affected by MS,” Campbell added.
