Selkirk College’s Digital Arts & New Media Program Year-End Show a Visual Feast

Cutting edge design, art, illustration and ideas will be on display when the Selkirk College Digital Arts & New Media Program (DANM) presents its year-end student show April 21 at Nelson’s Mary Hall on the Tenth Street Campus.
The annual showcase is a feast for the eyes featuring students’ photographs, digital and traditional art, film, animation, 3D work, and web design. There will be an interactive space featuring digital illustrators working on Cintiq tablets, a green screen, and 3D printing technology.
Student Yulia Kovalevais fine tuning the final touches on her project to be displayed at the year-end show. She has constructed a stark white 3D model of the iconic Nelson Courthouse on which she will project a short animated film. The film will reflect West Kootenay nature, its people, the structure and building of the courthouse and contains a futuristic element using 3D images.
“I like that my project called “Transformations Through Time” combines many of the elements that I learned in the digital arts program,” she says. “I can’t wait to share my success in this project with the public at our year-end show.”
Kovalevais from Moscow, Russia where she studied industrial arts and worked as an exhibit designer before moving to Nelson with her husband and young daughter to take the Digital Arts & New Media Program. Her goal was to pursue a different facet of her profession and she found just what she wanted at Selkirk College.
“The program offers students an opportunity to try all kinds of media. You have the freedom to explore and discover what it is that you want to do,” Kovalevasays.
The visual artist dreams of seeing her projection mapping video played across the real-life courthouse on Nelson’s Ward Street. Kovalevais also ready to make contacts and pursue a career in this field.
“There are no limits to what I can do – whatever comes to mind, I can create that,” she says.
The DANM year-end show is a popular one-night-only event. Making this year’s evening even more exciting is that students from Kootenay Studio Arts (KSA) will have work on display and for sale as well as Contemporary Music & Technology Program students performing. School Chair Daryl Jolly emphasizes the importance of collaboration among the arts programs at Selkirk College.
“This show will capture the diverse artistic talents of the Digital Arts & New Media Program alongside our KSA and music program students. Throughout the school year, we collaborate as we create and we want those attending our event to get a feel for the strength and value this adds to our art programming,” says Jolly.
This year marks the 18th year of the annual DANM Year-End Show. Itruns from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Mary Hall. Admission is free and the entire community is invited to come check it out.
