Logan Wullum and Ryan Cooper each had three points to lead the Nelson Leafs to a convincing 6-1 victory over the Rockets in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League action Friday night in Golden.

Nelson exploded for four goals in the third period to break open a close 2-1 game.

Cooper led the offence with a pair of goals with singles going to Nicholas Wihak, Sawyer Hunt, Brendan Makay and Ryan Keilty.

Jake Gudjonson replied for Golden.

Leaf netminder Sam Burford was tested only a few times in goal as Nelson outshot the Rockets 51-28, including a 21-8 count in the third period.

The win was the fifth straight for the Leaf, which increased its lead in the Murdoch Division to seven points over idle Beaver Valley Nitehawks.

In other Murdoch action, Castlegar blasted Spokane Braves 7-2 at home while Grand Forks continued to slide, losing its fourth consecutive game at home Friday.

Liam Plunkett had five points to lead Creston Valley Thunder Cats to a convincing 8-1 victory over the struggling Border Bruins.

Nelson, winners of three straight victories over Golden, returns to action Saturday in Sparwood when the Leafs face the Fernie Ghostriders.

The game is being played in Sparwood as the Fernie Memorial Arena remains closed for an investigation after an ammonia leak claimed the life of three people last month.

Next home game for Nelson is Saturday, November 25 against Castlegar Rebels.
