Whitewater Ski Club has qualified a handful of racers to compete at the upcoming 2018 BC Winter Games beginning Thursday with the Opening Ceremonies in Kamloops.

The BC Winter Games, set for February 22-25, are hosting the alpine events at Sun Peaks Resort. Races include slalom and giant slalom.

“This event is an important experience in the development of an athlete,” saidWhitewater head coach Dylan Henderson. “It gives them a chance to experience the pressure of a high level competition that is similar to competing on the world stage.”

The Kootenay Zone, comprising seven teams from the area between Grand Forks and Alberta, has a twelve boy/twelve girl quota for participation in the games. Whitewater has qualified six skiers this year, who will be accompanied by Kootenay Zone Head Coach Al Bull.

“It’s a fun experience for these young athletes,” continues Coach Henderson. “The racers are picked up all over the province by the BC Games, and brought to Kamloops where they sleep in the local schools. It’s organized similarly to the Olympics, with an opening ceremony, parades, and live music. This being an Olympic winter, it makes it all the more exciting.”

The athletes left this week for Kamloops, returning from the Games Sunday.
