Weitzing, Sukra top New Denver stop on West Kootenay Cross Country circuit

Katharina Weitzing of Mount Sentinel and Alex Sukra of Salmo captured top spots in the Senior Division at the New Denver stop on the West Kootenay High School Cross Country race Tuesday in New Denver.
Sukra edged Daniel Stewart of Mount Sentinel by just over a minute to capture the Senior Boy’s title while Weitzing dominated the Senior Girl’s race.
Weitzing won the Senior Girl’s run by a whopping 10 minutes over Mount Sentinel teammates Jasper Mair and Daisy Chevalier.
The race, where runners from schools throughout the West Kootenay ran the challenging Carpenter Creek course, is the second of the season.
Other winners included Matti Erickson of Trafalgar, edging teammate Emerald Lockhart, winning the Junior Boy’s race; Daniela Sirois of Mount Sentinel claiming the Junior Girl’s run; Arlo Veerman of Winlaw winning the Elementary Boy’s title and Petula Perry of host Lucerne in New Denver finishing first in the Elementary Girls.
Eamonn Hawksbee won the Elementary K-Grade 3 race.
A total of 59 runners participated in the race.
The West Kootenay Cross Country circuit now shifts to Rossland for the next race.
