Smashing performace at BC 55-Plus Senior Games for Nelson athletes

Nelsonites turned in a fine performance, winning a truckload of medals at the BC 55-Plus Senior Games last week in Vernon.

West Kootenay/Boundary finished seventh overall with 115 total medals — 32 gold, 49 silver and 34 bronze.

Leading the medal count were the swimmers.

Marylee Banyard captured four gold medals in the 80-84 division — gold in 50-meter butterfly and 100 and 200-meter individual medley and 25-meter butterfly.

Banyard also won a silver in the 200-meter freestyle and combined with Barb Roberts of Rossland, Joan Hooper of Christina Lake and Joan Gale of Grand Forks to claim bronze in the medley relay.

Kathryn Marsh won three silver medals in 60-64 division — 50-meter butterfly, 100-meter backstroke and 200-meter individual medley.

Marsh also took home three bronze in 400-meter freestyle, 100-meter individual medley and 25-meter butterfly.

June Johnston won silver in 70-74 100-meter individual medley and bronze in 100-meter backstroke.

Roger Kerby won a pair of medals in the badminton court. Kerby won gold in 80-84 open doubles, combining with Rick Bradburn of Harrison Hot Springs. He also won a silver in 75-79 mixed doubles with Anne Henderson of Brentwood Bay.

Kathy Letham won a silver in badminton mixed doubles with Ken Lam of Richmond.

Dalvanir McLean of Nelson won a silver in women’s mixed tennis.

Sharisse Kyle won three silver medals in cycling — time trial, road race and hill climb in women’s 60-64 division while Marion Williamson captured silver in Five-Pin Bowling.

Mike Wagg won gold in men’s 65-69 golf while Jim Reimer claimed bronze in men’s 60-64 5000 meters and John Gwilliam took home gold in men’s 70-74 5000-meter power walk.

The Kootenay Rhythm Dragons led the charge on the water by capturing a silver medal result in the Dragon Boat Race.

The team includes, Jeanette McCarvell, Deb Smith, Peggy Scott, Diane Tulloch (steersperson), Marg Lozinski, Sophie Goodwin, Maureen Hendry, Cath Little (coach), Janet Stephenson, Marlene Pozin, Karen Heddle, Patti MacMillan, Lorna Maxwell, Pat Gibson, Diane Lines, Lena Guignion, Susan Faye, Patricia Logan, Megan Mulvihill, Randi Jensen, Puleng Pratt, Frances Long, Sarah Quayle (manager) and Judi Evans.
