Nelson Soccer Association teams won a large number of medals during the Terry Walgren Youth Soccer Tournament this past weekend at the Lakeside Fields.

Nelson Selects competed against teams from Creston, Fernie, Castlegar/Trail, Cranbrook and Columbia Valley during the weekend.

More than 45 teams from throughout the Kootenay Zone competed in division from U10 to U18.

The U13 Selects defeated Kootenay South to claim the gold medal.

Also winning gold medals were Nelson’s U15 Girls, U16 Girls, and U18 Boys.

The U15 girls played in a pool that included Cranbrook (KEYSA), Columbia Valley and the Nelson U14 Selects.

The U15 Selects defeated U14’s, Cranbrook and Columbia Valley in round robin play before posting another win over Columbia Valley in the gold medal round

The U13 Boys and U16 Boys each finished with silver medals.

The tournament is the first hosted in Nelson since the pandemic canceled events the past two years.

Tournament organizers want to thank parent volunteers for assisting in jobs from operating the concession to field changes and registrations.

“We could not do this successfully without all of you.”

The tournament is held in the honour of Terry Walgren, a former Nelson Soccer Association coach.
