The Nelson Killjoys host the four-team Blood Bath and Beyond Women’s Roller Derby Tournament Saturday (June 25) at the NDCC Arena.

The Killjoys are joined by NWO Wolf Pack (Chilliwack), Avalance City All Stars (Fernie) and TOAST (Thompson-Okanagan) in the event which begins at 9 a.m.

The Championship Final, against the top two teams, is set for 6:30 p.m., also in the NDCC Arena.

The Killjoys are 1-1 since leaving the West Kootenay Roller Derby League.

Nelson defeated Armstrong before dropping a close encounter to Kelowna Apple Smacks in the spring.

“This event is the only chance to see roller derby in Nelson this year, so it’s not one to miss,” said a Killjoys spokeperson.

“The Killjoys are donating to the SPCA, the Women’s Centre and CJLY Co-op Radio instead of taking any funds from admission, so we really hope the whole community supports these great causes, supports local non profit organizations, and supports local (and undeniably entertaining) athletics.”

The WKRD League disbanded last fall after the three teams in Nelson, Castlegar and Trail/Rossland decided to separate into travel teams.

There is no admission to the tournament.

Instead, spectators are urged to make a donation to local charity during the tournament.

“The Killjoys are really proud of all that we and our team and league accomplished while we established roller derby in the Kootenays, and we are also extra proud to have been the final Golden Boot winners,” the Killjoys spokeperson explained.
