Ice shock league-leading Cariboo Cougars

The Kootenay Ice snapped a five-game losing streak in 2015 after surprising Cariboo Cougars 7-5 in BC Hockey Major Midget League action Sunday in Prince George.

Shawn Campbell of Castlegar scored the winner with five minutes left in the game to secure the shocking victory over one of the elite teams in the BCMMHL.

The Cougars lead the BCMMHL with a 12 point advantage over Vancouver Northwest Giants.

Leading 5-2 after 40 minutes, Kootenay watched as the Cougars stormed back with three goals in a seven minute span to tie the game.

However, Campbell scored an unassisted marker, and Aiden Browell added an empty net goal to lift the Ice to the hard-fought victory.

Cranbrook’s Korbyn Chabot, with a pair, Kadrian Klimchuk of Castlegar, Evan Gorman of Trail and Brendan Mckay of Trail also scored for Kootenay.

Justin Almedia scored twice to lead the Cougars.

Cariboo opened the two-game set Saturday with a 7-1 trashing of Kootenay.

The Cougars led 3-0 after one period and 5-0 following two frames.

Klimchuk scored the lone goal for the Ice.

Solomon Burk of Castlegar and Jason Mailhiot of Trail played goal for Kootenay.

The Ice return to action Saturday when the club host the South Island Royals at 12:30 p.m. in the NDCC Arena.

Game two of the series goes Sunday at 8 a.m. in the NDCC Arena.
