Nelson Minor Hockey grad Geoff Kinrade and his Binghamton Senator team came close but lost a heartbreaker to Manchester Monarchs in game one of the Calder Cup playoffs Thursday.

David Kolomatis scored the winning goal in the final minutes of the game to give the Monarchs a 2-1 decision over the Sens in American Hockey League playoff action at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester.

Game two in the series is set for Friday in Manchester.

The series shifts back to Binghamton, the AHL farm team for the NHL’s Ottawa Senators, for games three and four Sunday and Tuesday.

Manchester, the third seed in the Eastern Conference of the AHL, took a 1-0 lead in the second period in the tightly played contest when Corey Elkins scored.

Kolomatis increased the margin to 2-0 before Ryan Potulny scored late in the game.

Binghamton, finishing seventh in the Conference, out shot the Monarch 35-29 but couldn’t get the puck past starting goalie Jeff Zatkoff.

The teams split the regular season series.
