LVR student lobbyists for Climate Solutions looking for community support

Two Nelson youth are taking their fight against climate change to the next level.
L.V. Rogers Grade 12 students, Linn Murray and Alyssa Taburiaux are in the process of raising funds to travel to Ottawa in November to talk directly to Members of Parliament (MPs) to tell them that the youth of Canada are very worried about their future and Canada’s future.
Both students are members of the Nelson Chapter of Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL), a grassroots non-partisan organization focused on climate solutions.
Like many youth, they are very concerned about the future we are leaving them.
“I want my little sisters to grow up without having to worry about whether they will have clean air to breathe and fresh water to drink,” said the 17-year-old Taburiaux, who has a deep love and respect for the beautiful environment we have in the Kootenays, and worries about climate change’s impacts.
Taburiaux and Murray hope to represent youth at the annual CCL conference and lobbying days in Ottawa.
“Right now in Canada we find ourselves at a critical tipping point – a cross-roads in our collective story – and I would like to show that our generation can take positive action on this issue,” said the soon to be 17 Murray, who comes to the issue from a social and environmental justice perspective.
Many experts say climate change is the biggest issue of our times as dire headlines continue to populate media publications:
- July and August were the hottest months ever recorded
- One third of the Great Barrier Reef has died
- Arctic ice is melting more quickly than anyone thought possible.
- This year will be the warmest year on record, breaking the last record set in 2015
