The Nelson Civic Theatre Society (NCTS) announces the appointment of Eleanor Stacey as Executive Director.

Stacey brings more than 15 years of professional experience as a fundraiser, program developer, arts administrator, and consultant in the non-profit cultural sector.

Stacey joins the Civic Theatre in October 2014, and be responsible for guiding the organization into its next phase of development and operations.

NCTS Board President Marilyn Mint:

“We are very pleased that Eleanor is joining our team.  We are indeed fortunate to have found someone with her experience and capabilities.  Eleanor is ideally suited to lead us towards our goal of converting the Civic into a state-of-the-art multi-screen, multi-purpose community facility.”

Stacey is originally from Nelson.  Growing up here, she was very familiar with the Capitol Theatre, where her mother, Margaret Stacey, was the General Manager for 18 years.

During that time, she gained experience as a volunteer, designer and director.  Inspired by the template used by the Capitol for its annual summer shows, Ms. Stacey founded the Apple Summer Youth Theatre Program in Anguilla, British West Indies, which she administered from 1998-2003, and again in Summer 2008.

Stacey holds a BA from Mount Allison University (New Brunswick) and an MFA in Performing Arts Administration from Brooklyn College (City University of New York).

As a student, she gained professional experience with Landestheater Tuebingen (Germany), New York City Opera, and The Roundabout Theatre.

In New York City, Ms. Stacey has held the positions of Development Associate at Theatre Communications Group—North America’s largest professional theatre association and the producer of American Theatre Magazine—and Director of Development at Classic Stage Company.

In 2005, she returned to BC and joined The Cultch as Director of Development, managing a multi-faceted fundraising program, an array of special events, and the selection process for the Rio Tinto Alcan Performing Arts Award.

Most recently, Stacey was the Executive Director of the Greater Vancouver Professional Theatre Alliance (GVPTA), where she expanded professional development programming for theatre makers, deepened membership value, and established Western Canada’s only Unified General Audition process for theatre companies and actors.

Stacey returned to Nelson over a year ago, hoping that she might see professional opportunities to stay and raise her young family here.  Upon accepting the position, Ms. Stacey stated:

“It is a tremendous pleasure to join the Civic Theatre at this pivotal moment in its development as a cultural entity and community service.  I look forward to working with the board, staff, membership, and greater local community to continue to grow and shape this unique organization.”
