There’s some new artwork on Baker Street in the form of two leaf-shaped bike racks.

Local artist Tony Waterfall, who created hand-forged steel racks — the first of five to be installed this year — designed the art.

Waterfall has been creating handmade, custom ironwork for homes and businesses in the Kootenays for more than 20 years.

The project is part of a call to proposals the City of Nelson put out this year seeking artist-designed bike racks.

“Providing more bicycle parking is one of several strategies aimed at increasing active transportation,” said City Councillor Donna Macdonald in a prepared statement.

“And of course, we want to do that in a creative and beautiful way and support local artists and artisans.”

This project is an initiative of the City of Nelson’s Cultural Development Committee in partnership with the City of Nelson Public Works Department.

The CDC is dedicated to the development, promotion and enhancement of Nelson’s arts, culture and heritage sector.
