Air Cadets take flight over Kootenay River Valley

The cadets of 561 Nelson Osprey Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Cadets, spent a recent Saturday exploring the Kootenay River Valley from the air.
Fourteen cadets who are aged 12 to 18 spent 45 minutes each in the Cessna 172 aircraft from Kootenay Lake Aviation.
One of the flights went to main lake of Kootenay Lake by following the West Arm, one flight went to Trail and two flights went to Castlegar and the Lower Arrow Lakes.
During the flights, the cadets were shown how the flight controls of the aircraft work and the effect they have on the aircraft. They were also shown how the instruments work. The cadet that was in the front seat also had chance to control the aircraft.
The squadron has cadets from Nelson, Nakusp and the Crescent Valley.
The Nelson Air Cadet Squadron meets are every Wednesday evening at the Nelson Eagles Hall.

- Aviation is just one aspect of the Air Cadet program. The cadets can also participate in Leadership, Citizenship, Orienteering, First Aid and Effective Speaking.
- There is little or no cost for the cadets to be a member of Air Cadets and Summer Training is no cost.
