Irene Victoria Martin, age 102, of Nelson, BC passed away from COVID-19 complications on August 14, 2021 at Jubilee Manor. She was born on March 23, 1919 in Millwall, London, UK, the eldest child of the late James and Emily Warren.
Irene was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years Charles Martin, her daughter Fay Collier, her granddaughter Sharon Collier and two brothers, Edward Warren and James Warren.
Irene is survived by two sons, Roy Martin (Maureen) and Barry Martin (Hazel); one daughter, Beryl Brideson (Kennedy); 11 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren and 15 great great grandchildren; her sister Iris Prizeman and her brother Ken Warren.
Irene married Charles Martin during the Great Depression. She survived the bombing of London in WWII but her house did not. Irene lived in Wales for part of the war before returning to London. In the 1970s Irene and Charles moved to Nelson, BC for a fresh start and their remaining children in the UK joined them. Irene was an avid bowler and enjoyed gardening, flower arranging, arts, crafts and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
She had a brilliant mind, full of knowledge about the world and able to remember the birthdates of everyone in her huge extended family. She showed incredible resiliency in dealing with the hardships she had to endure throughout her long life. Irene retained her sharp mind and cheerful nature until the end of her life. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her, especially her family. A special thank you to the staff of Jubilee Manor for their loving kindness in providing care to Irene in the last year.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
