Inspiration is close at hand as one of the most influential Canadians of our time is coming to the West Kootenay this Wednesday.

Geneticist and environmentalist David Suzuki will be speaking at Castlegar’s Mir Centre for Peace (7:30 p.m.) in another installment of the lecture series on his recent book, The Legacy — offering up knowledge and wisdom gleaned from his own life.

It’s a legacy and lecture for generations to come, said the chair of the Mir Centre for Peace, Randy Janzen.

“This lecture is bound to influence our very being and encourage us to take a hard look at who we are and what we are doing to our planet,” he said.

Through Suzuki’s book — and related in his lecture — he will encourage people to realize “the laws of nature have priority over the forces of economics.”

A more holistic point of view towards life must be adopted, he contends in his book, and people must begin to work together to respond to the problems we now face.

Suzuki is the founder of the David Suzuki Foundation, the author of more than 40 books, and has been named a Companion of the Order of Canada.

Tickets for the event are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and $10 for students, available at Otter Books in Nelson, the Castlegar and District Public Library and Selkirk College bookstores.

The opportunity to purchase The Legacy and obtain a personally signed copy by David Suzuki will be available.
