2018 Doris Bradshaw Bursary winners announced

Two students from L.V. Rogers in Nelson and Salmo Secondary are the 2018 winners of the Doris Bradshaw Bursary.
LVR Grade 11 student Harlan Hoffman-Miller and Salmo’s Rio Isaacs, also in Grade 11, were recently announced as winners by the Amy Ferguson Institute.
Hoffman-Miller studies classical guitar with Rita Deane while Isaacs studies piano with Kathryn Whitehead, guitar and bass with Dave Roland and is a member of Corazon Choir with Allison Girvan.
The goal of the Amy Ferguson Institute (AFI) is to further vocal arts (both choral and solo) in the West Kootenay region. Since its inception in 2000, AFI, in conjunction with Nelson Community Opera (NCO) – mounted productions of opera and musical theatre, including two commissioned works, KHAOS and Echoes of the Mountains. From 2001 to 2004, AFI produced the Nelson Summer Songfest, a classical music festival, and a series of masterclasses and workshops, featuring internationally renowned sopranos Nancy Argenta, Ingrid Attrot and Dr. Marc Hafso.
To accomplish its goal of furthering the vocal arts, AFI believes that increasing educational opportunities for area youth is essential. The Doris Bradshaw Bursary helps meet this goal.
“It feels good to be a part, in some small way, in helping these young recipients receive a bursary to continue their musical studies,” said Eva Blum, AFI Board Member.
Doris Bradshaw was a lifelong resident of Nelson — and a lifelong lover of music, thanks to her studies with Dr. Amy Ferguson. Doris Bradshaw was a soprano and a consistent winner in the West Kootenay Music Festival. She also enjoyed a long career as a popular journalist with the Nelson Daily News and was instrumental in setting up the Daily News Archives. When she passed away in 2015, her family created the Doris Bradshaw Bursary, an annual bursary of $500 to be shared by two young West Kootenay musicians to further their musical studies while attending elementary, junior or senior high school.
