Small multimedia works on display at Nelson Library

An exhibition of small works in a variety of media graces the walls of the Nelson Public Library. Catherine Linley’s work includes small paintings in watercolor, acrylic and pastel, drawings in coloured pencil, and photography, each displaying attention to small detail and colour nuance.
Linley has been sketching her whole life, but painting, she says, is relatively new; she also works in collage and does some photography. “I like to think I’m pretty adaptable,” she says. Recently, art classes in her building have pushed her to try new things, but whatever she does, she prefers to work small, which comes with its own set of challenges.
“You really have to plan your composition,” she says, and she’s had plenty of practice: artist trading cards—a favourite pastime—might involve all of her chosen mediums, separately or together, and rendered onto on a 3 x 5 card she sends to other artists, who send their own creations back to her. Her collection has grown to include work by artists from far and wide.
The beauty of working small? “You can work anywhere,” says Linley.
Linley was born in England, where she studied art at Bideford School of Art and Leeds Polytechnic. In 1987 she moved to Canada with her three young daughters who grew up and became Canadian citizens, as she did. “Art and writing have been lifetime interests for me,” she says.
The exhibition continues through October.
