Pow nets winner to power Leafs past Grizzlies in Teck Cup Championship

The Nelson Leafs climbed back into the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League Teck Cup Championship with a 2-1 victory over the Revelstoke Grizzlies Monday at the NDCC Arena.

Revelstoke leads the best-of-seven series 2-1 with Game four Tuesday in Nelson.

Game time is 7 p.m.

Bryden Pow scored the winner Monday for the Leafs, snapping a 1-1 tie with a power play goal late in the second period.

Bennett Anklewich gave the Leafs a 1-0 lead 3:14 into the second period when he banged home a rebound with Marko Pavlovic and Pow collecting assists.

Carter Bettenson got the Grizzlies even at one with his fourth goal scored on the power-play as he cashed in on a rebound.

Both goals were scored on the power play.

Pow’s winner came with under six minutes remaining in the second period on a broken play as he fired a wrist shot top shelf past Brandon Weare.

Dylan Marshall made 20 saves in goal for Nelson, including 12 in the third period, to secure the victory.

Weare stopped 23 shots in goal for the Grizzlies.

Marshall, Sookro earns Instat KI Stars selections

Nelson defenceman Bryce Sookro and goalie Dylan Marshall earned two of the three Instat Kootenay International Junior Hockey League 3 Stars of the Week ending March 27.

In four games, the Sookro had a goal and five assists and played a key role in helping his team defeat the Dynamiters in six games. S

The Nelson native assisted on the tying goal to force overtime in Game 5, then set up Liam Noble for his OT, series clinching goal in Game 6. Sookro has collected an assist in each of the first two Teck Cup Championship games.

Sookro leads all KIJHL defencemen in playoff points with five goals, 12 assists for 17 points in 16 games.

Meanwhile, Marshall, a native of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan was key in helping the Leafs defeat the Kimberley Dynamiters in six games.

Marshall turned aside 98 of 108 shots for a .907 SP and a 2.16 GAA and was big for the Leafs in two overtime victories. He also had a strong performance in Game 2 of the Teck Cup Championship turning aside 31 of 33 shots in a 2-1 loss to the Revelstoke Grizzlies.

Brandon Kasdorf of Revelstoke earned the other KI star selection.

Kasdorf put up two goals and an assist in the opening games of the Teck Cup Championship against the Nelson Leafs. Both of Kasdorf’s goals were game winners. In 13 playoff games, Kasdorf has six goals and five assists for 11 points.
