The Nelson Killjoys scored early and often en route to reclaiming the West Kootenay Roller Derby title at the Mountain Mayhem Championship Saturday in the NDCC Arena.

The Killjoys dominated the contest from the opening jam, scoring a 220-146 win over defending champion Castlegar Dam City Rollers to claim the Golden Boot Trophy.

“Winning the title was very rewarding after a season of hard training and determination,” said Jennifer Worman, AKA, Meg Ablast of the Killjoys.

The Killjoys piled on the points early, opening a 112-56 lead at halftime.
In the second half Castlegar staged a brief rally but the Killjoys responded to add another 100-plus points to the scoresheet.

This is the second title in three years for the Killjoys after Castlegar edged the Heritage City squad for its first title of its history in 2014.

The Killjoys now take the show on the road this weekend in Calgary.

“We go to Calgary this weekend to play the Thrashing Lassies and then we will take a break until the fall,” Worman said.

The WKRD League is suffering through a bit of a lull after one team dropped out this season to reduce the league to three teams.

Rossland/Trail is the other team in the league.

However, Worman still feels there’s a need for women’s roller derby in the West Kootenay.

“There may be some changes within the league and we will explore the best ways to keep this sport alive in the coming months,” Worman said.

“There are many skaters, coaches, refs, and non-skating officials who are passionate about roller derby and we will find a way to keep rolling. The killjoys will begin recruiting new skaters and refs this fall.”
