DriveBC confirms the Trans Canada Highway west of Field BC, closed in both directions, is expected to be open Thursday afternoon following a rock slike Monday.

Work crews on site continue to move debris and stabilize the rock face.

Alternate route is via Highway 95 and 93S.

Trans Canada Highway closed due to rock slide

Anyone travelling to Alberta from BC near Radium Hot Springs or Kootenay National Park may see more traffic for the next few days after a rock slide closed a section of the Trans-Canada Highway 16 kilometres west of Field Monday.

In a media release, Parks Canada said the rockslide occurred while contractors were drilling holes to place explosives at the rock scaling site.

The slide injured two contractors working at the site. The two were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The slide brought down approximately 10,000 cubic metres of rock and debris, which is expected to close the highway up to possibly 72 hours.

Trans Canada traffic is being diverted south on Highway 93 to Radium Hot Springs, then head north on Highway 95 to Golden to rejoin the Trans-Canada Highway west of the closure.
