Southeast Fire Centre is advising the public personnel will be conducting a prescribed for BC Timber Sales in the North Creek area — 40 kilometres north of Kaslo — this week, weather and site conditions permitting.

Southeast Fire Centre said smoke from this 24.5-hectare controlled burn could be visible from the communities of Duncan Lake, Meadow Creek and Howser.

“Trained BC Wildfire Service personnel will carefully monitor the fire at all times,” the release said.

“The goal of this burn is to reduce the amount of dead and combustible material (forest fuels), delay the growth of competing vegetation and decrease the risk of catastrophic wildfires in the area. The burn is part of a fuel reduction prescription to prepare the site for tree planting.”

Southeast Fire Centre said all prescribed burns must comply with the Environmental Management Act and the open burning smoke control regulation — this helps minimize the amount of smoke generated.
