Nelson Municipal Library service could be extending further up the southern Area H section of the Slocan Valley if the “appetite” is correctly identified, says one village councilor in Slocan.

Hillary Elliott said the village of Slocan was not included in the Oct. 16 library referenda vote with the southern portion of Regional District of Central Kootenay areas H, E and F.

But many people in the village have expressed an interest in being included in the consulting process that is underway by the Nelson Library to determine what communities want for services, she said.

“I felt from the community’s interest there was at least enough interest to see what might be available and what could move forward,” she said.

As a result, village council will be exploring what the appetite is for joining the service, what it is and whether a taxation service that the Village could offer — either as a village or in conjunction with Area H — would be the same as the services the Nelson Library could offer.

There is currently a community library in the village, as well as the W. E. Graham School library and the W. E. Graham Community Services Society that offers computer labs and senior courses.

“We don’t want to compete and overlap any services, but we do want to develop and build on those services that do exist,” said Elliott.

This week she will be presenting an option for Village council to be part of the consulting process that is going on around Area H for Nelson Library services.
