West Kootenay winter sport enthusiasts have an eye on the sky and while you wait for the first flakes to fall, it’s time to get geared up.

Students in Selkirk College’s Ski Resort Operations & Management (SROAM) Program know this routine well. This week you will find second-year SROAMies creating displays in the windows of Baker Street businesses as part of their Retail Management course.

“Practicing classroom learning right in the community of Nelson is a fantastic opportunity for SROAM students to get real-world experience while making connections in the industry they are striving to be a part of,” says Selkirk College instructor Robyn Mitz.

As you head downtown for a fresh pair of goggles, a stylish new jacket or that snowboard of your dreams, stop by the Village Ski Hut, Ripping Giraffe, ROAM and Valhalla Pure Outfitters for inspiration courtesy of SROAM students.

Starting Friday, shoppers have the chance to vote for which window display is best and win winter gear. Go online to selkirk.ca and select the display that gets you the most excited for this year’s snow season. Students will win bragging rights and you will be entered into a draw for $50 from the participating business of your choice.

The Ski Resort Operations & Management Program covers all aspects of ski resort operations, giving students a unique blend of management skills and industry knowledge to prepare them for lasting leadership roles. You can find out more about the program at selkirk.ca/ski.
