One person taken to hospital following a fire Saturday night in the 600 Block of Mill Street Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said in a media release Sunday.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said the person was treated for burns and smoke inhalation at Kootenay Lake Hospital before being release later that night.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services responded to a report of a house fire in on Mill Street at 10:22 p.m.

The extent of the fire forced the call out of an additional 16 members after both on-duty firefighters arrived on scene.

“Upon arrival of the first crew, one house had heavy fire showing from the first and second floor with flames impacting the adjacent neighbour’s house,” Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said.

“The first arriving crew’s primary objective was to ensure no-one was inside either house and to protect the neighbour’s house.”

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said due to the close proximity of the two homes, it was apparent that the original fire had extended into a section of the neighbour’s house.

“As the event unfolded, crews worked to extinguish the main fire and as well, dealt with the fire that had subsequently developed in the neighbour’s roof,” Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said.

“The fires were extinguished shortly before 1 a.m.”

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said the other occupants of the houses are in the care of family and friends.

“By 3:30 a.m. Dec 12, all fire trucks had left the scene, the houses were secured, and a “fire watch” was established to guard the scene until the investigation has been completed,” Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said.

In all, 19 firefighters responded to the incident with two fire engines, one tender truck, and two utility vehicles.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said the cost of the damage to the two homes is undetermined and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services would like to take this opportunity thank Nelson City Police and Nelson Hydro, as well, to remind everyone to check if your home is adequately insured and to call 9-1-1 as soon as they see fire.
