Nelson Police Department Chief Wayne Holland has announced his retirement.

Holland made the announcement in a City of Nelson media release.

“Being the top cop in Nelson for the last five years has been one of the most enjoyable and rewarding experiences in his 34 years as a Police Officer,” Holland said in the release.

“We have excellent sworn, civilian and volunteer personnel in the Nelson Police Department who have been a pleasure to work with,” he added.

Holland, who officially told the Nelson Police Board during its July meeting of his intentions to step down at the NPD Chief, arrived in Nelson in 2010 after retiring from the City of Vancouver Police Department.

He concludes his five-year contract with the City of Nelson on January 29, 2016.

The Nelson Police Board has appointed a committee to review the succession planning and recruitment process and ultimately will determine the next steps for replacing Chief Holland upon his retirement.

The Nelson Police Board is also starting to work on the Strategic Plan and will be seeking input from Community Stakeholders and the public.

The Plan will help guide the Department over the next five years.

Chief Holland has no immediate plans for the future, but does plan to do some traveling.

He and his wife will be returning to the Lower Mainland to be near family and friends. Though they are leaving the area, their love for Nelson will bring them back for regular visits.
