Nelson RCMP is attempting to piece together what happened on the waters of Kootenay Lake near Troop Junction beach during the early hours of Saturday (August 20).

RCMP Sergeant Monty Taylor told The Nelson Daily police were called to Kootenay Lake Hospital after receiving a report of injuries resulting from a boating accident on the West Arm of Kootenay Lake.

“Two boats with six people — four males and two females — were involved in an accident early Saturday morning,” Taylor told The Nelson Daily Wednesday.

Taylor said a 16-foot Sea Ray, occupied by two males, travelling on the lake rear-ended a 19-foot pleasure boat. He said the accident occurred sometime around 3 a.m.

Taylor said the impact of the collision the disabled Sea Ray, partially sinking the boat in the water. However, the Sea Ray was built with a Styrofoam so it remained floating.

Taylor said it appears the operators of the 19-foot pleasure boat, with two males and two females on board, were able to transport everyone to shore as well as pulling the Sea Ray to the Nasookin dock, off Highway 3A.

All six people attended Kootenay Lake Hospital where they were checked over and released.

One of the males was treated for lacerations and received stitches.

Taylor said the accident remains under investigation as police determine whether the boats had the proper nautical lighting for night operation.

Speed and alcohol have not been ruled out as possible cause of the accident.
