Nelson Police warn of cougar sighting in Uphill area

Nelson Police officers were out warning the public early Tuesday morning that a cougar was spotted at the intersection of at the intersection of Carbonate and Cherry Streets.
Sgt Paul Bayes of the Nelson Police Department confirmed dispatch received a report at approximately 6 a.m. that an animal match that description was spotted.
“NPD members located some tracks and notified the Conservation office,” Bayes said in a media release.
“The cougar was not located and no other reports were received.”
Readers of The Nelson Daily also confirmed police were in the area this morning warning the public of the cougar wandering at large.
Bayes said NPD would like to remind the public to be aware of wildlife when out walking in the early hours.
He said if anyone observes dangerous wildlife in an urban area involved in any of the following, please report the incident to the 24 hour, toll free call centre at: 1-877-952-7277 (RAPP):
- Accessing garbage or other human supplied food sources
- Instances where wildlife cannot be easily scarred off
- Dangerous wildlife is in a public location like a city park or school during daylight hours
- When a cougar or wolf is seen in a urban area
