October is a great time for gun owners to turn in any unwanted firearms to police, as departments across BC want to make homes safer by declaring a province-wide Gun Amnesty.

“The month-long amnesty will apply to any documented or undocumented firearms and other weapons as well as to any amount of ammunition,” Sergeant Paul Bayes of the Nelson Police Department said in a media release Wednesday.

“For the entire month of October, people who want to surrender ammunition or weapons, including imitations and replicas, can contact the Nelson Police Department at 250-354-3919 and provide basic information on the items they want to surrender.”

Bayes said police would visit residences to pick up the firearms.

“The public should not bring the guns or ammunition to the police themselves,” he said.

“The amnesty will not apply to weapons or firearms used for a criminal purpose.”

Bayes said the public with any unwanted weapons, firearms or ammunition, they may not be legally entitled to own, this is the perfect opportunity to help make both home and community a little bit safer during BC Gun Amnesty this October.
