Nelson Fire Rescue was called out to deal with a propane leak at the Nelson Sewage Treatment Plant Thursday morning.

Nelson Assistant Fire Chief Michael Daloise said the call came in at 8:53 a.m. of a propane lead in the plant boiler room.

“Upon arrival the initial responders were briefed by the plant operator as to the potential hazards and causes,” Daloise, adding on duty staff as well as the Fire Chief Len MacCharles and two additional members responded to the call.

“The first arriving crew’s primary objective was to shut off the propane supply to the building and eliminate any potential ignition sources. When a backup crew was on scene two fire attack hose lines were deployed, the building was ventilated and entry was made to assess for any explosive gas levels.

“A complete check of the interconnected buildings was conducted with no gas levels detected.  In the boiler room a gas alarm was activated on one of the boilers for reasons unknown.  This boiler was shut off until it could be assessed and repaired.”

Daloise said in total two fire engines and one utility vehicle were used for the call.

No injuries were reported as a result of this incident.

“The cause of the gas alarm is still under investigation by the BC Safety Authority Gas Branch and the plant operators,” Daloise said.

Daloise said Nelson Fire Rescue Services would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that if they smell gas to evacuate and call 9-1-1.

“Do not phone from inside the house or activate any electrical switches,” he said.
