In a media release, the Kootenay Lake School Board of Education announced a final decision has been made in regards to the Creston Education Centre.

“The Creston Education Centre will officially close on Friday, June 29, 2018,” the release said Wednesday evening.

During cost-cutting exercises in 2016, the Board previously said the CEC would close January 31, 2018.

“We always make these decisions with the best interests of our children in mind,” Board of Education Chairperson, Lenora Trenaman said in the release.

“We look forward to seeing our learners excel in their new nurturing environments. We would like to thank the community for all their input over the years.”

Students and Teachers will move as follows:

  • StrongStart to Adam Roberts Elementary (ARES) with outreach to Canyon Lister.
  • HomeLinks Creston and Wildflower Creston to Prince Charles Senior Secondary (PCSS) and/or surrounding district-owned properties on the PCSS block.
  • A transition plan is in the works and more information will be available shortly.

The release said the Creston technology department has already moved to the Creston Operations site at 1427 Northwest Boulevard.

“Itinerant teachers, which include a full-time school psychologist, half-time speech language pathologist, half-time physiotherapist, and (.4) occupational therapist and a (.75) speech language assistant will be located at Prince Charles Secondary School, next to the new youth wellness hub which will be located inside the school, centralizing services for families.”

The Board said decommissioning plan for Creston Education Centre, involving the exact details and logistics of the move, will be announced to students, staff, and families in coming weeks. Celebrations at the end of the year at CEC and welcoming to students to their new locations will take place at all sites.
