Ministry of Environment media spokeperson David Karn said a male hunter was transported to Calgary hospital by STARS helicopter after being attacked by a grizzly bear Sunday morning.

Karn said the attack happened at approximately 9 a.m. near Fernie.

“One male victim was injured in the attack by a boar grizzly bear,” Karn explained in an emailed statement.

“During the attack, the victim’s hunting partner shot at the bear killing the bear.”

Karn said Conservation Officers responded immediately along with other first responders.

He said the victim was in stable condition when he left the area.

“The second individual involved (the hunting partner) was not injured,” Karn said.

“The bear is a grizzly bear boar and it is believed at this time to be the only bear involved.”

Karn said Conservation Officers from Fernie and Cranbrook are investigating the incident.
