A man was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries Monday, after a dramatic helicopter rescue.

Fire Chief Sam Lattanzio says the call came in at 10:22 a.m. of a fallen rock climber near the Brilliant substation, just above the Brilliant generating station, in the Megawatt climbing area.

“We met up with BC Ambulance Services on scene,” he said. “Members of Nelson Search and Rescue (SAR) happened to be there.”

When Castlegar SAR arrived, CFD turned over jurisdiction of the event, but remained on scene to assist.

“A helicopter team was mobilized, he had to be extricated by a longline rescue, dangling from a rope beneath the helicopter as it flew back to Dam Helicopters at the airport,” Lattanzio said. “This was a perfect example of why we need them.”

There is no word as to the man’s current condition.
