Fourth annual Nelson Chrysler Soap Box Derby kicks off Road Kings weekend

The Road Kings Queen City Cruise may deservedly so, get all the hype but there’s a race that slowly cruising up in popularity the same weekend.

The fourth annual Nelson Chrysler Soap Box Derby is to kick off the weekend Friday, September 7 beginning at 5 p.m. from the corner of Kootenay and Carbonate Streets.

Racers are ready to rocket down Kootenay Street with any sort of creation one can muster.

“You can race any style of soap box you like . . . from a professional racer to a GT Racer with wheels, or maybe a bath tub or an outhouse on wheels,” said event organizer Elliot Carter in a written press release.

There are three categories, 12-and-under; 12-18 years and over 18.

Brakes and helmets are mandatory.

Registration forms are available at Fair Realty (402 Baker Street), Nelson Chrysler and Nelson Box Office.

Registration closes Wednesday, Sept 5th at 5 p.m.

Entry is free with a donation of a non-perishable food items for the Salvation Army to help support our community.

MainJet Motorsports has donated quads and side by sides to help pull the cars back up the hill.

Kootenay Co-op will also be handing out treats to competitors.
