In the past, Nelson, BC has cooked with many big dogs in all streams of life.

The Heritage City now puts its bragging rights up against four other cities in Canada in the Air Miles Detour Contest.

The hub of the West Kootenay is battling against Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Morin-Heights, Quebec, Mulmur, Ontario and Port Hawksbury, Nova Scotia for the right to host a summer concert featuring singer-song writer Meghan Trainor.

The contest voting runs from May 1-31.

Before anyone can cast a vote, they need to register for Air Miles (contest is open only to Canadian resident AIR MILES Collectors who are at least 16 years of age as of May 1, 2016) — and people can only vote for their favourite town once, so please choose Nelson.

However for the four-plus week period, any Air Mile earned by those registered for the competition will be also counted as a vote.

To officially kick off the countdown to the Air Miles Detour Contest, Nelson is hosting a Street Party from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hall Street Plaza in the 500 Block of Baker Street.

There live music from Moontricks and Red Eyed Soul, a free barbecue with vendors, prizes and a video screening of the Nelson mini doc, which was filmed locally in March.
