The library has gone public.

Nelson’s library has officially changed its name, going from the Nelson Municipal Library — a name it has held since it was established in 1920 — to the Nelson Public Library.

City council approved the recommended name change to provide a more “regionally inclusive perspective,” reflecting the recent inclusion of Regional District of Central Kootenay’s areas F and southern H.

During an October 2010 referendum, areas F and southern H voted to contribute financially to the library, while Area E did not.

Staff time will be the only cost, with updates forthcoming to the website, publicity materials, letterhead, business cards and library cards. There will also be a cost to provide signage to the outside of the building.

“All costs will be covered by the library budget,” a letter from chief librarian, June Stockdale, told council.

She also said the library has seen an enormous surge in memberships from the “affected areas which we’re able to accommodate with our new funding and staffing levels.”
