Police are asking for public assistance in solving an unusual crime – a theft from the dump.

Castlegar RCMP Cpl. Debbie Postnikoff says the Ootischenia landfill was robbed on the evenings of May 18 and June 8.

“The suspect stole roughly $1,000 worth of vehicle batteries,” she said, adding the thief was caught on the landfill’s video surveillance camera. “He can be seen loading up a wheelbarrow, which he wheels off camera to what we presume was a get away vehicle.”

The camera caught the suspect, who appears to be a male in his mid 40s, in the act, and police are asking anyone who knows who the man might be to contact the RCMP detachment at 250-365-7721.

Postnikoff said it’s unusual to have a theft situation at a garbage dump, but police are no less committed to finding the culprit.
