All hands on deck for baby boom at Kootenay Lake Hospital

Interior Health said on any given day, Kootenay Lake Hospital (KLH) welcomes one new baby into the world.
On (Tuesday) July 24, hospital staff went over and above the call of duty when there were six babies delivered in a span of 22 hours. In contrast, at Kootenay Boundary Regional in Trail four babies were born.
Maternity nurses, physicians, obstetricians, midwives, pediatricians, operating room staff, anesthetists, clerks, admitting, housekeeping, laboratory, diagnostic imaging, pharmacy, and dietary – everyone at KLH stepped in and stepped up to ensure all moms and babies received the care they needed.
“It was an incredible amount of work,” said interim maternity manager Trina Larson in a IH media release.
“It was great to see how the teams from each department came together to deliver great care. Thank you to all the extra people who came in as extra workload to support their colleagues during this hectic time. I am so proud of everyone for getting through such a baby boom and being such a caring team to work with.”
Interior Health staff said July was a busier month than usual at KLH, with 41 total deliveries.
No specific event nine months prior to the July baby boom has been identified as the cause.
