A Fernie woman has died while attempting to miss an elk on a highway in southern Alberta Wednesday night.

RCMP said a pick up was driving on Highway 3 near Crowsnest Pass, Alta., when it struck and elk crossing the highway.

The vehicle was damaged, but the driver was able to safely park the vehicle.

However, shortly after, two women in a second eastbound vehicle swerved to avoid another elk but lost control and colliding with parked truck.

The woman, from Fernie, was pronounced dead at the scene.

EMS also transported the 35-year-old male passenger from Fernie to hospital in the Crownest Pass.

RCMP says road conditions, which were partially snow and frost-covered, are believed to have contributed to the accident but an investigation is still underway.
