Another year, Another Record total for Coldest Night of the Year

Once again Nelsonites set out into chilly temperatures to support 2019 Coldest Night of the Year Fundraiser Saturday in the Heritage City.
More than 235 walkers braved sub-zero temperatures and trekked through the streets of Nelson to raise a total or $39,860. The goal was $35,000.
“This year the funding focus shifts to support individuals,” the CNOY website said.
“Our Ready For Home program provides supports to homeless individuals ready for housing, individuals newly housed and those at risk of losing their housing.
“At the core of Ready For Home is a paid staff member who works one-on-one is a paid staff member who works one-on-one with individuals to find housing, to transition into affordable housing and to sustain them in their existing accommodation.”
Top team was Erica’s Avengers, which raised $3,255 with Kootenay Co-op second at 2,851.40.
Deb’s Diamonds raised $2,515, Wildflower School Walkers $2,145 and Team Trafalgar $1,798 to round out the top five teams.
A total of 32 teams participated, including Lakeside Physio Crew, Rotary Noon-to-Daybreak Nightwalkers, Kootenay Rhythm Dragons, Stepping Stones and Covenant Church Team.
The super-fun, family-friendly event is held across Canada on the last Saturday of February, this year February 23.
The Coldest Night of the Year event allows fundraisers to experience what homeless feel during a cold winter's night and challenge faced by those experiencing homelessness during winter.
Nelson Mayor John Dooley spoke to the crowd during Saturday's Coldest Night of the Year, praising the walkers.
