The Nelson Tennis Club (NTC) teamed up with Nelson & District Credit Union and the Lions Club to provide discounted memberships to help those experiencing financial hardship.

“One of the Club’s objectives is to make tennis and pickleball at the LVR School courts as accessible as possible and, with that in mind, we’ve kept fees frozen for the last five years,” says NTC President, Keith Bridger.

“But we know that financial hardship is a major barrier to playing sports — this initiative is helping so we’re very appreciative of the Credit Union and Lions.”

All ages and skill levels are welcome to apply under the bursary program, and access to equipment is also offered.

Applicants are asked if they can contribute anything towards the cost of their membership.

“That way, the funds can be stretched as far as possible so we can support more people,” added Bridger.

Those funds are coming from Nelson & District Credit Union that donated $500, and the Lions Club, $300.

In the spirit of coo-operation, Tom Atkins from the Credit Union states, “As a Credit Union and as a community, we all embrace the spirit of local. The Nelson & District Credit Union family supports members, local businesses and communities to ensure everyone’s financial health. Being an active part of our communities keeps us all vibrant.”

The bursary program has helped a number of families and individuals play tennis or pickleball already this year and, although it is winding down, the program can still accommodate a few more applicants.
