Deryn Collier launches her new book A Real Somebody, on Wednesday, July 12 at 7 p.m., at the Nelson Library. Set in postwar Montreal in 1947, this charming historical novel is the story of a young writer pursuing her dreams.

June Grant works in a prestigious advertising firm’s steno pool to support her once-prosperous family. As she navigates her way through the advertising world, June becomes increasingly intrigued by the hidden aspects of her sister Daisy’s seemingly idyllic life — a life that seems to embody the societal expectations June herself grapples with.

Inspired by the true story of the author’s aunt, A Real Somebody captures the essence of a young woman breaking free from the conventions of her time. Collier is excited to introduce readers to this new book, “My Aunt June was an incredibly inspiring person — a writer and a deep thinker who defied societal norms.

Conveying her voice through my own fiction has been a truly meaningful experience.”

Collier is also the author of two mystery novels, Confined Space, nominated for a Best First Novel Award by the Crime Writers of Canada and Open Secret.

Apart from her writing endeavours, Collier shares her love for gardening, sewing, and year-round swims in a glacier-fed lake through her Instagram account. Readers can also connect with her through her newsletter, “The Aunt June Files,” which offers a behind-the-scenes look at her work and research.
