There’s a new skipper on deck for the Nelson Leafs Hockey Club — a coach that’s familiar to fans of the Green and White.

The Nelson Leafs Hockey Society Board announced Wednesday that Adam DiBella is taking over the head coaching position for the defending Kootenay Conference Champions for the upcoming 2022-23 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League season.

Assistant coach Adam DiBella is taking over the head coaching position after his father Mario DiBella retired from coaching Junior Hockey following the Leafs sensational playoff run.

“We feel that Adam has shown an immense amount of leadership over the past years, and we feel that he is ready to take on this role,” said the Nelson Leafs Hockey Society Board in a social media post.

The Hockey Society said contract details will be released later.

The Hockey Society Board also thanked Mario DiBella for his countless hours of dedication at head coach of the Leafs Hockey Club.

“We would like to wish (Mario) all the best in his retirement from the Leafs,” the Hockey Society Board said.

Nelson concluded an amazing playoff run, losing to KIJHL Champion Revelstoke Grizzlies in the Teck Cup Final 4-1.

Nelson won the Murdoch Division Regular Season title with a 31-10-0-1 record — 16 points ahead of second place Beaver Valley Nitehawks before capturing the Murdoch Division Playoff crown with two very competitive series wins against Castlegar Rebels and Beaver Valley.

Nelson then dethroned the Kootenay Conference Champs from Kimberley in six games to advance to the Teck Cup Final against Revelstoke.

The Grizzlies won the Bronze Medal at the BC Junior B Hockey Championship Cyclone Taylor Cup, defeating Peninsula Panthers 3-2.

Langley Trappers defeated host Delta Ice Hawks 4-2 to capture the Cyclone Taylor Cup title.
